Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, highlighted the need for NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to step down, adding that the latter did all that he can during his term.

NATO announced on Sunday that Stoltenberg has no plans to extend his mandate for a fourth time and expects to be replaced in October.

"The mandate of Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has been extended three times and he has served for a total of almost nine years," spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said.

She added: "The Secretary General's term comes to an end in October of this year and he has no intention to seek another extension of his mandate."

The long-serving NATO leader took office at the alliance’s Brussels headquarters on 1 October 2014 and has overseen the Western alliance through several international crises.

Furthermore, Stoltenberg has overseen NATO's response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine and the ongoing conflict, the most brutal on European soil since the 1940s.
