On Saturday, the Russian Foreign and Defense Ministers, Sergey Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu arrived in the Armenian Capital Yerevan, as Moscow seeks to maintain the ceasefire reached between Azerbaijan, and Armenia under its auspices, according to Sputnik news agency.
According to a statement issued by the Russian Defense Ministry, "Shoigu met with Armenian Prime Minister (PM) Nikol Pashinyan and the newly-appointed Minister of Defense Vagharshak Harutyunyan."
During their meeting, they discussed issues related to the peacekeeping operation in the disputed area of Nagorno-Karabakh, the deployment of Russian peacekeeping units and observation posts, monitoring cessation of hostilities, as well as humanitarian issues.
On his part, Pashinyan expressed his hope to strengthen relations between Armenia and Russia in the field of defense.
It is worth mentioning that, earlier this month, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Russia signed an agreement to end the military conflict over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.
It follows six weeks of fighting between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians.
