A Russian court banned Facebook and Instagram in the country after finding Meta Platforms Inc guilty of "extremist activity", TASS news agency reported on Monday.
Russia has already banned Facebook for restricting access to Russian media. In like manner, Instagram was blocked after Meta allowed social media users in Ukraine to post messages urging violence against President Vladimir Putin and troops Moscow sent into Kyiv on Feb. 24.
Facebook relaxed its violent speech policy to allow users to call for death and aggression against Russians due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
Reuters reported that Meta will let some Facebook and Instagram posts in countries including Russia, Ukraine and Poland call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
“As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we have temporarily made allowances for forms of political expression that would normally violate our rules like violent speech such as ‘death to the Russian invaders,” Reuters quoted a Meta spokesperson as saying.
