Russian Deputy Prime Minister (PM) Alexei Overchuk expressed his country's welcome of Pakistan's request to join the BRICS group of nations.
In a press conference following his meeting with his Pakistani counterpart and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in Islamabad, Overchuk stated, "We are pleased with Pakistan's application to join BRICS," expressing Moscow's support for the move, according to the Russian news agency TASS. He added, "Over the past year, we have witnessed significant expansion in BRICS, with countries from around the world showing interest in joining the group," emphasizing the strong relations between Russia and Pakistan.
Earlier, Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch announced that Islamabad had submitted a formal request to join BRICS after reviewing the outcomes of the group's recent summit in Johannesburg.
It is noteworthy that the Russian Foreign Ministry previously stated that Moscow, as this year's BRICS chair, is interested in welcoming as many countries as possible to join either as members or as partners with sustainable ties to the group.
