Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed condolences over the Israeli killing of Palestinian Journalist Shireen Abu Akleh during an Israeli raid on the West Bank.
Lavrov supported a request by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to investigate the murder.
"Lavrov expressed sincere condolences over the tragic death of Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh on May 11 and supported the PLO's request to conduct a thorough and objective investigation of her murder," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.
Last week, the 51-year-old Palestinian-American journalist was shot in the head last while covering an Israeli raid in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank. She was rushed immediately to a hospital in critical condition and was declared dead shortly after.
In addition, the Israeli forces clashed with the Palestinian people at Abu Akleh's funeral, kicking and hitting people with batons and causing mourners carrying her coffin to lose balance and drop it to the ground.
Mourners raised the Palestinian flags – which are rarely seen – as thousands of people joined Abu Akleh’s funeral procession on Friday. They sang the Palestinian national anthem and chanted “Palestine! Palestine!”.
