Russia will have to take steps in response to Sweden's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which will depend on the conditions for this country's integration into the alliance, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"Sweden's accession to NATO will seriously harm the security of Northern Europe and the European continent in general. Russia will have to take retaliatory steps of a military-technical nature and others to avoid threats to its national security stemming from it," the ministry added in a statement.

"The course of Stockholm's foreign policy, which was based on more than 200 years of Sweden's tradition of neutrality, has been a key factor for stability and confidence in the Baltic Sea region for decades," the ministry noted.
