Russia has announced ambitious plans to build a nuclear power station on the Moon within the next decade, a move aimed at supplying energy for its lunar exploration program and supporting a joint Russian-Chinese research base.
In a statement, Russia’s space agency Roscosmos said it intends to construct the nuclear power facility on the lunar surface by 2036. The agency confirmed it has signed a contract with the Russian aerospace company Lavochkin Association to carry out the project.
According to Roscosmos, the planned nuclear station will provide a reliable source of power for Russia’s lunar activities, including robotic rovers, scientific observatories and the infrastructure of the proposed joint Russian-Chinese International Lunar Research Station.
The agency described the project as a major step towards establishing a permanent scientific presence on the Moon.
It said the initiative marks a shift from isolated missions to a comprehensive, long-term lunar exploration program designed to support sustained research and technological development beyond Earth.
