On Wednesday, Russian energy firm Gazprom said that it cut off gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria for failing to pay for gas in rubles.
Gazprom mentioned that it will suspend the gas supplies until the payments are made.
On Tuesday evening, the Polish and Bulgarian authorities announced that Gazprom informed them of its intention to cut off gas shipments to them the next day, despite the contracts concluded with the company.
However, the two countries that are members of NATO and EU confirmed that they are prepared to make up for the shortfall from other sources.
Gazprom’s warning came amid concern about the risk of the conflict spreading outside Ukraine, after a series of explosions that Kyiv attributed to Russia in the breakaway Moldavian region of Transnistria.
