Russia Estimates EU Sanction Losses at Whopping €2 Trillion

The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a staggering estimate of the economic toll that European Union nations have allegedly suffered as a result of ongoing sanctions against Moscow. According to Alexander Grushko, Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, the total losses for the EU now range between €1.5 trillion and €2 trillion.

In an interview with the Izvestia newspaper on Friday, February 20, 2026, Grushko described these figures as the "most realistic" assessment of the damage inflicted on European economies. The diplomat argued that the sanctions, which were significantly ramped up following the events in Ukraine in February 2022, have backfired by triggering sharp increases in electricity, fuel, and food prices, thereby driving up the cost of living across the continent and the United States.

A Cycle of Escalation

Since the start of the conflict, the European Union has implemented 19 separate packages of sanctions targeting Russia's financial, energy, and industrial sectors. Reports from Brussels indicate that the European Commission is currently preparing a 20th package, despite growing internal debates among member states regarding the effectiveness and sustainability of the measures.

Moscow's Defiance

Moscow has repeatedly stated that it remains resilient under the mounting pressure, asserting that it has successfully adapted its economy to the new geopolitical reality. Grushko further claimed that Western leaders "lack the courage" to admit that the sanctions policy has failed to achieve its strategic objectives. As the EU moves toward even more restrictive measures, the Kremlin continues to frame the situation as a self-inflicted economic wound for the West, while the global energy market remains in a state of prolonged volatility.
