Russia has deployed trained military dolphins to its naval base in the Black Sea, a move likely to protect its fleet from underwater attack, according to a new analysis of satellite imagery.

According to the Guardian, a UK daily newspaper, the US Naval Institute (USNI) reviewed satellite images of the naval base in the port of Sevastopol and concluded that two dolphins were transferred to the base in February at the start of Moscow's attack on Ukraine.

Russia has a history of training dolphins for military purposes, using aquatic mammals to retrieve objects or deter enemy pers.

The Russian Sevastopol naval base is crucial to the Russian military, as it is located at the southern tip of Crimea, which Moscow annexed in 2014. According to a USNI analysis, many Russian ships anchored there, while far from missile range, are likely to be vulnerable to sea attacks.
