The Russian embassy in the United States rejected the accusations against Moscow, which were included in the annual report of the US State Department on the situation of human rights in the world.
"We categorically reject the accusations against our country. We consider them fabricated and unrealistic," the embassy statement read.
It called on the US authorities to stop politicizing the human rights file and using it as a pretext to interfere in our internal affairs and the work of the competent Russian authorities.
The statement denounced attempts to assess "the level and effectiveness of democracy" by Western standards.
The Russian embassy described the report as "absolutely biased" and its publication on the 20th anniversary of the US invasion of Iraq as "cynical and hypocritical."
