The Russian Federal Security Service announced the detention of journalist Ivan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg from the Wall Street Journal office in Moscow on suspicion of espionage.
According to the authority, the journalist, on instructions from the United States of America, collected information that constitutes a state secret about “the activities of a company affiliated with the Russian military-industrial complex.”
The intelligence said that while he was trying to obtain classified information, the American citizen was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg.
Gershkovich is the first reporter for a US news outlet to be arrested on espionage charges in Russia since the cold war. His arrest comes amid bitter tensions between Moscow and Washington DC over the fighting in Ukraine.
