The Kremlin has reaffirmed its commitment to a long-term strategic alliance with Syria, citing "expansive potential" for economic and trade cooperation following high-level talks in Moscow.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov highlighted that the recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa focused heavily on revitalizing bilateral trade and economic frameworks. According to Peskov, both nations share a deep-seated mutual interest in expanding their partnership beyond traditional military support.
Economic Synergy and Trade Expansion "The talks between the Russian and Syrian presidents focused on bilateral trade and economic relations and their development," Peskov stated. He emphasized that the potential for growth in these sectors is "very broad," noting that both Moscow and Damascus are actively seeking new avenues for investment and commercial exchange.
The Future of Russian Military Bases A significant portion of the diplomatic agenda also addressed the status of Russian military installations within Syria. When questioned by reporters regarding the future of these assets, Peskov confirmed that "the issue of Russian military bases was on the agenda of the talks," though he did not provide specific details on new deployment terms.
Strengthening Political Ties President Putin praised the evolving nature of the relationship, crediting the efforts of President Al-Sharaa for the steady progress in diplomatic ties. In response, Al-Sharaa underscored the "depth" of the Russo-Syrian bond, emphasizing Russia's pivotal role in maintaining Syria’s territorial integrity and national stability.
This diplomatic push signals a transition in the Russia-Syria relationship, moving toward a more robust economic framework as Syria seeks to rebuild and Russia aims to solidify its influence in the Levant.
