U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is heading to Israel on Saturday, amid signs of growing frustration from President Donald Trump over the continuation of Israel’s military campaign against Hamas, which he believes is prolonging the war in the Gaza Strip.
According to The New York Times, Rubio is expected to arrive in Israel on Sunday, coinciding with preparations by the Israeli army for a large-scale offensive on Gaza City.
His visit comes just days after an Israeli airstrike targeted Hamas officials in Qatar, sparking Arab and European criticism that the attack would complicate efforts to end the conflict.
Earlier this week, Trump voiced his discontent with the strike carried out in the Qatari capital, Doha, saying it served neither Israel’s objectives nor those of the United States.
