A military airbase near Baghdad International Airport has been struck by Grad rockets, according to Iraq’s Ministry of Defense, marking a new escalation in security tensions.
The rockets were reportedly launched from the outskirts of the capital, causing at least five explosions that shook the surrounding area. The strike targeted a base within the military section of the airport.
Officials said a military transport aircraft was destroyed after being hit, sustaining critical damage to one of its wings. Thick smoke was seen rising from the site following the attack.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible, as concerns grow over continued attacks on strategic facilities in Iraq. The incident underscores the fragile security environment amid broader regional unrest.
