In today’s world, robots serve people as first-responders, companions and problem-solvers. They are found everywhere around us. The remarkable breakthrough in artificial intelligence allows robots to carry out important functions beyond human capabilities.

According to a new study by Oxford economics analysis firm, robots are expected to displace about 20 million manufacturing jobs all over the world by 2030, CNBC news reported.

Thus, about 8.5% of the global manufacturing workforce could be displaced by robots, the study noted, adding that the number of robots in use worldwide increased three times over the past two decades by 2.25 million.

Moreover by 2030, about 1.5 million jobs would be replaced by robots in the U.S. However, in China, that number was expected to surpass 11 million. Across EU member states, at least 2 million people would lose their jobs because of automation, the study claimed.

Despite the threat of job losses, the report urged lawmakers not to hinder the rise of automation.

According to a number of researchers, these findings should not lead policy-makers and other stakeholders to obstruct the adoption of robot technology. Instead they should distribute the robotic profits more evenly by helping vulnerable workers prepare for and adapt to the sudden change it would bring.

Moreover, they suggested that governments could motivate companies and workers with financial benefits for engaging in local programs to retrain workers, calling on policymakers to develop “aggressive, forward-thinking programs” to counteract the negative impacts of automation.
