Today marks the death anniversary of iconic actress Fayrouz, the so-called “The Magnificent Child”.
The late actress was born in Cairo, Egypt, on 15 March 1943, to an Armenian Egyptian family; her ancestors fled ottoman persecution and settled in Egypt. Her sister, Nelly Kalfaian, also entered the entertainment industry.
Fayrouz, the dimpled, soft-haired child star who sang, danced, sobbed, and grinned her way into the hearts of the 1950's moviegoers, had a unique talent.
Fayrouz, known in private life as Perouz Kalfayan, died at her home in Cairo.
A talented and ultra-adorable entertainer, Fayrouz was Egypt’s top box-office draw from 1950 to 1964, a record no other child star has come near. She beat out such grown-ups as Tahya Karyoka, Samya Gamal, Madiha Youssry, and Mohamed Fawzy.
She made her debut at the age of 7 in the 1950 film Yasmine. According to critics, many feel that she managed to add depth to the character of iconic child Yasmine, which was no mean feat.
Thereafter, Fayrouz appeared in scores of movies and kept children singing “ Darboka” for generations.
Fayrouz blossomed into a pretty young woman, but audiences lost interest, and she retired from films at 21. She married the renowned Egyptian actor Bader Eldin Gamgom and had two children, Ayman and Eman.
Fayrouz’s expert singing and tap dancing in the 1953 feature “Sourat az Zafaf ” first gained her wide notice. The number she performed with adorable actor and filmmaker Anwar Wagdy, and comedian Ismail Yassin, “Dahab,” became the title of one of her first starring features later that year.
Also in 1955, she starred in “El-Herman” a comedy-drama based on a story by Nayrouz Abd El-Malik that showcased her acting talent.
In “Asafir el Ganna" or Birds of Paradise, the beautiful and charming child sang many of her notable songs and did battle with many characters.
The iconic actress, who is best known for playing Feyrouz Hanem, passed away aged 72 in 2016.
