An archaeological mission from the Central Department of Sunken Antiquities at the Supreme Council of Antiquities discovered remains of a sunken ship from the 3rd century BC, as well as various ancient jars, in a site at the Mediterranean Sea, about 650 meters from el-Alamein beach.

Supreme Council of Antiquities Secretary-General Moustafa Waziri stressed that this discovery highlighted the commercial importance of the el-Alamein region and the northern coast in the 3rd century BC.

Head of the council's Egyptian antiquities section Ayman Ashmawy added that during archaeological survey work in the region remains of the sunken ship’s wood were found alongside hundreds of pieces of pottery, including a large number of jars (amphoras) imported from the island of Rhodes in Greece, which were used in ancient times for storing and transporting of wine.

It is worth mentioning that, the archaeological mission used state-of-the-art photogrammetry technology to meticulously document the findings.
