Spain’s national meteorological agency issued a red alert on Monday for heavy rainfall along the coast of Valencia, as the region braces for potential flash floods just a year after deadly floods devastated the area.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) announced on the social platform X that the red alert applies to Valencia’s southern coast until 11:59 p.m., warning of an extreme weather threat. Authorities cautioned residents about possible flash floods and urged them to follow civil protection guidelines.

Torrential rain has already led to the closure of several major roads and railway lines in southern Catalonia, along with the temporary suspension of activities at some universities, according to local officials.

Spain is still reeling from the impact of catastrophic floods that struck near Valencia in October 2024, claiming more than 230 lives.

Climate experts have long warned that global warming is intensifying extreme weather patterns, leading to more frequent and severe storms, floods, and heatwaves across southern Europe.
