Europe is experiencing an exceptionally severe polar cold wave, with temperatures dropping to record levels across several countries, causing widespread disruption to daily life, school closures, and delays to air travel.

According to Spain’s 20 Minutos newspaper, Sweden has emerged as the coldest area in Europe, with temperatures falling to around minus 44 degrees Celsius.

Such extreme cold is considered rare for this time of year and has prompted emergency warnings from local authorities, urging residents to take precautionary measures.

Northern Lapland in Finland has also been hit hard, with temperatures dropping to approximately minus 40 degrees Celsius.

The severe cold has caused transportation problems, while authorities have warned residents, particularly in rural and mountainous areas, against prolonged exposure to the freezing conditions.

In Poland, especially in the northern and eastern regions, temperatures have fallen to around minus 25 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, parts of the United Kingdom have also been affected, with northern Scotland and some central areas recording temperatures as low as minus 12 degrees Celsius.

Central European regions, including areas along the German-Polish border, have seen temperatures drop to about minus 15 degrees.

The impact of the polar wave extends beyond the cold itself. Flight delays, disruptions to road transport, and the closure of some schools have been reported across several countries.

Authorities continue to urge residents to limit outdoor exposure and follow safety guidelines.

Weather experts warn that these record-low temperatures may persist in the coming days, as the polar air mass continues to dominate weather patterns across much of Europe.
