Real Madrid Mourns Death of Lorenzo Sanz

Real Madrid has mourned the death of its former president Lorenzo Sanz, who passed away after being taken to hospital with coronavirus.

In a statement, the Whites offered their condolences to their former chairman, who passed away on Saturday.

"Real Madrid, the club president and Board of Directors all wish to express the deepest regret at the passing of Lorenzo Sanz, who was club president of Real Madrid from 1995 to 2000," the statement read.

Sanz was the chairman of the Whites from 1995 until 2000. During his presidency to Real Madrid, the Whites managed to claim the Uefa Champions League twice.

"The club wishes to convey its condolences to his wife Mari Luz, his children, Lorenzo, Francisco, Fernando, María Luz (Malula) and Diana, as well as his family and friends. Our condolences are shared by all Madridistas," the statement added.

Spanish authorities recorded 400 new coronavirus deaths, bringing the total number of the deaths in the European state to 1720.

On March 12, the Spanish authorities decided to suspend all sporting activities for two weeks after Real Madrid squad going into quarantine because of coronavirus.

On Wednesday, March 11, WHO declared that the coronavirus, which is spreading around the world, a “global pandemic; however, it announced the novel COVID-19 is still “controllable”.

According to the organization, the number of the COVID-19 infections outside China has doubled in the past two weeks, and the number of countries hit by the epidemic has tripled.

“We are very concerned to achieve the alarming levels of the outbreak and its severity, as well as the alarming levels of inaction,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at a press conference in Geneva.

“Now, COVID-19 can be categorized as a pandemic… we have never seen a pandemic spread due to the coronavirus,” Adhanom added.
