Hossam Saleh, the spokesperson for the United Media Company confirmed that the series "El-Malek" or The King, which was expected to stream during the holy month of Ramadan has been abruptly suspended.

Saleh added that an urgent committee has been formed from a group of specialists in history, archaeology and sociology to watch the series, review the entire scenario, and give an objective and professional opinion on the series, which received big criticism among social media users and Egyptologists.

The series, which is based on Naguib Mahfouz's novel, is portraying the life of Pharaoh King Ahmose, who is considered an icon of strength and pride in the Egyptian history for his role in expelling the Hyksos invaders from the Nile Delta.

Archaeologists have said that the personal items used in the series are completely wrong, from crowns to beards, and have nothing to do with Ahmose nor the pharaohs.

Saleh pointed out in a statement that the committee was formed to decide whether the series will be streamed during Ramadan or not, adding that he accepts the decision even if against the producing company.

"EL Malek" series is written by Khaled Diab and Sherine Diab, directed by Hussein Al-Manbawi, and starring Amr Youssef, Saba Mubarak, Reem Mostafa and Maged El-Masry.
