Tohoku Electric Power has confirmed a radioactive liquid leak at the Onagawa Nuclear Power Plant in northeastern Japan.

According to the company, the leak was detected during daytime inspections inside the turbine section of the plant’s second reactor unit in Miyagi Prefecture.

Officials stated that the radioactive fluid escaped through a crack in a condenser pump drainage tank while the reactor was fully shut down.

The company stressed that the liquid remained contained within the building and that no environmental contamination or external radiation impact had been recorded.

Tohoku Electric Power also rejected speculation linking the incident to the 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the same region later in the evening, insisting the two events were unrelated.

Located on the northern coast of Honshu Island, nearly 330 kilometers northeast of Tokyo, the Onagawa nuclear plant has been operational since 1984.
