Qatar has announced a $400 million support package for Lebanon, reaffirming its commitment to the country’s stability and recovery, a Qatari envoy said on Monday.
Speaking at a joint press conference in Beirut with Lebanon’s Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, Qatari envoy Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Al-Khulaifi said Doha stands firmly with Lebanon, describing the country’s stability as a cornerstone for the wider region and calling for direct dialogue to meet the aspirations of the Lebanese people.
Al-Khulaifi outlined the aid package, which includes $40 million to support Lebanon’s electricity sector and $360 million for development projects to be implemented through the Qatar Fund for Development. He also announced the launch of a voluntary return program for 100,000 Syrian refugees, to be carried out in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration.
The Qatari envoy condemned Israeli attacks on Lebanon and violations of its sovereignty, stressing the need to respect the cessation of hostilities and adhere to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701.
Al-Khulaifi also pointed to ongoing international engagement, saying dialogue with the United States continues and that Lebanon remains on the joint Qatari American agenda. He added that the time has come for Lebanon’s recovery and renewed progress after years of political and economic crisis.
