In an enchanting musical night that carried the fragrance of the past and the splendor of the present, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO), led by Egyptian maestro Nayer Naji, performed a concert titled "An Evening of Golden Age Classics" in Doha on Sunday night.
The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra has always combined orchestral performance with oriental music, whether by incorporating the oud or the art of Nihma.
The evening featured the performance of a slew of Arab singing stars, including Egyptian artists Marwa Nagy and Ahmed Effat as well as Tunisian singer Hamza Al-Fadlawi, who enthralled the audience with masterpieces of Arab singing that have transcended genres, inspired audiences, and defined entire generations.
The evening launched with the performance of “Longa Farahfaza” by the iconic Maestro Riad Al Sonbati, followed by a selection of songs by Umm Kulthum, such as "Enta Omri," "Ana Fi Intizarak," and "Hayrat Qalbi," and Abdel Halim Hafez's tunes "Gana El Hawa" and " Ala Hesb Wedad," as well as classic songs by Farid al-Atrash, Abdel Wahab, Fairuz, and Wadih Al-Safi – all presented in a distinct flair that preserved the songs authenticity while adding a unique timbre to the overall performance.
The programme moved lightly between different singing schools, from classical Egyptian singing and Levantine and Lebanese heritage, to popular folk songs, in an artistic display of Western and Eastern instruments performed in precise harmony that reflects the professionalism of the players and their ability to present Arabic music in a sophisticated international format.
The evening concluded with warm applause from the audience, who expressed their admiration for the high level of performance, affirming the success of "An Evening of Golden Age Classics" as one of the most prominent musical projects that combines authenticity and innovation in a comprehensive artistic performance.
The event was conceived and artistically supervised by the deputy Executive Director of QPO Dr. Nasser Suhaim, which was held as a part of a project that aims to revive Arab musical heritage and present it with a new vision befitting today's audience.
It also comes within the QPO's efforts to enhance cultural and artistic communication and consolidate musical identity in Qatar and the region.
