In a recent development, Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing coup crisis in Niger.
This call came during a Tuesday conversation with Assimi Goita, the leader of Mali's military council. This move follows previous warnings from West African nations against any military intervention in Niamey.
The Kremlin stated that the communication emphasized "the importance of addressing the situation in the Republic of Niger solely through peaceful and political means." This message was conveyed according to the French Press Agency (AFP).
The military council announced on Sunday evening that they have gathered evidence to prosecute the ousted president, along with local and foreign associates, before national and international bodies.
They are being charged with high treason, as well as undermining the internal and external security of Niger.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) released a statement in Abuja on Monday, considering this threat a "new form of provocation that contradicts the military authorities' intent in Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means." This situation adds further complexity to the regional dynamics in West Africa.
