Kremlin spokesman announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will hold a meeting with U.S. Envoy Christopher Wetko next week, according to the Russian news agency TASS.
The Kremlin spokesman did not disclose the nature of the issues the two sides will discuss, but the timing of the meeting comes amid tensions between Moscow and Washington concerning the Ukrainian file, sanctions, and security issues.
The meeting comes as disagreements between the two countries persist regarding the war in Ukraine and the role of the United States in supporting Kyiv, along with mutual accusations concerning regional tensions and political interference.
Observers believe that the meeting could represent a new test for the path of Russian-American relations at a time when Washington and Moscow are seeking to maintain open channels of communication despite the ongoing escalation.
