Zhirinovsky died in a Moscow hospital on Wednesday at the age of 75 after being hospitalised for more than two months due to COVID-19.
Zhirinovsky founded Russia’s far-right Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) and led it for over 30 years. He had been gravely ill for weeks after contracting Covid-19, despite claiming to have received eight vaccine doses, according to Russian media reports.
Meanwhile, a power struggle broke out in Moscow over who will replace him at the top of the LDPR, one of five parties loyal to the Kremlin in the State Duma.
The LDPR leader was buried at the Novodevichy Convent, Moscow's cemetery for leading figures.
