Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the crisis in Gaza cannot be resolved without the creation of an independent Palestinian state, stressing that any solution must take into account the views of Palestinians, including Hamas.
Speaking at the plenary session of the Valdai International Discussion Club, Putin criticized Western efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying they had failed to produce results. "The situation in the Middle East is deteriorating, and the West has been unable to offer a viable solution. The conflict cannot be resolved according to the Western recipe," he said, according to Sky News Arabia.
Putin noted that the Palestinian Authority should be responsible for administering Gaza, responding to a proposal to form an international body under the leadership of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair. He described Blair as "an experienced politician who could play a positive role."
The Russian leader also expressed Moscow’s readiness to support former U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative on Gaza, but only if it ultimately leads to the establishment of two states.
Commenting on recent Israeli strikes in Doha that targeted Hamas leaders, Putin said he was "surprised by Israel’s attacks on Qatar."
