Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Egypt’s leadership and the depth of cooperation between the two countries as the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant reaches new construction milestones. Speaking during a ceremony marking progress on Unit 1, Putin said Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi was the driving force behind launching the country’s first nuclear power project.
Putin described it as a “great honor” to witness this moment alongside Egypt, noting that the plant represents one of the most advanced examples of peaceful nuclear development in the region. He emphasized that the first reactor unit at El-Dabaa will be capable of generating 460 megawatts, providing a significant boost to Egypt’s electricity production capacity.
He stressed that the strategic partnership between Russia and Egypt has opened new horizons for technical cooperation, knowledge exchange and joint industrial capabilities. According to Putin, the ongoing collaboration extends beyond construction, shaping a long-term framework for energy security and scientific advancement.
Putin also announced that Egypt’s national electricity capacity is expected to increase by 35,000 kilowatts with the integration of the first unit, reinforcing the importance of nuclear energy as part of Egypt’s diversified energy strategy.
The Russian president expressed deep gratitude to all Egyptian and Russian engineers, technicians and specialists contributing to the project. He said their efforts represent a major achievement for both nations and reflect the strength of the bilateral partnership.
The El-Dabaa plant — built in cooperation with Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom — stands as one of the most significant joint ventures between Cairo and Moscow, marking a historic chapter in Egypt’s pursuit of peaceful nuclear power.
