Russia is weighing its representation at the upcoming G20 summit in South Africa, with President Vladimir Putin showing interest in taking part, Kremlin G20 representative Svetlana Lukash confirmed.
Speaking to Sputnik on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Lukash said that this matter is still being resolved, adding that she hopes President Putin will definitely participate in the Johannesburg summit, while noting no final decision has yet been made on the format of his attendance.
In June, Russian Foreign Ministry envoy for G20 and APEC affairs Marat Berdyev revealed that Putin had received an invitation and would determine the level of Russia’s participation.
In recent years, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has represented Moscow at the forum.
Putin last joined a South Africa-hosted summit, the 2023 BRICS meeting, virtually.
Pretoria continues to face international pressure as it recognizes the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Putin and Russian children’s commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova.
