Protocol Slip: Australian Flags Replaced Before King Charles Visit

Washington briefly found itself at the center of an awkward diplomatic moment after city authorities mistakenly raised Australian flags instead of British ones near the White House ahead of the upcoming visit of King Charles III.

According to reports, around 15 Australian flags were installed as part of preparations for the royal visit, before officials quickly identified and corrected the error, replacing them with the correct Union Jack. The incident occurred as the U.S. capital prepared extensively for the high-profile visit, with more than 230 flags displayed across the city.

The mix-up, though short-lived, drew attention due to its timing, coming just days before King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to arrive in Washington for an official visit from April 27 to 30. The trip is expected to carry both symbolic and political weight, as London and Washington seek to reinforce their longstanding alliance.

Observers noted that while the mistake appeared purely logistical, it may have stemmed from the fact that King Charles also serves as head of state in Australia, a member of the Commonwealth. However, the role remains largely ceremonial, making the use of Australian flags instead of British ones a clear protocol error rather than a political signal.

The visit itself comes at a sensitive time in UK-U.S. relations, often described as the “special relationship,” which has recently faced strains over differing approaches to key international issues, including tensions involving Iran.
