Thousands of people demonstrated in the streets of Rome, responding to the Five Star Movement's call to demonstrate against the EU's rearmament plan.
A number of protesters burned the EU flag and carried the Palestinian flag alongside the logo of the Italian Five Star Movement.
Organizers of the march, which started from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and headed toward Fori Imperiali, were surprised by the number of participants. They described the turnout as "unexpected, beyond all expectations," as the number of attendees could have reached 100,000, according to the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero.
They held up signs reading "No to war," and others raised the Palestinian flag in support of Gaza.
