A dramatic scene unfolded yesterday, Sunday, at Barinas prison, located in western Venezuela, 500 kilometers from the capital, Caracas. Hundreds of prisoners climbed onto the roof of the building, holding up signs pleading for help and declaring their defiance of the prison administration due to what they described as "systematic torture" at the hands of the authorities.
The protesting prisoners, some of whom covered their faces, demanded the immediate dismissal of the prison director. Black smoke billowed from inside the facility as mattresses and sheets were set ablaze. They documented their protest in videos posted on social media, showing their suffering inside the cells.
The prison was heavily guarded, with National Guard troops surrounding the building in riot gear. Dozens of prisoners' families gathered outside the walls, stunned and fearful.
