The President of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, has publicly declared his intention to hand over power to his son, Nour El-Fath, at the end of his presidential term in 2029.

This announcement marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the island nation.

Speaking to his supporters on Thursday in a speech delivered on Mohéli Island, Assoumani stated, "My son will succeed me as president of the state and the party," signaling his plans for succession once he steps down from office.

This marks the first time Assoumani has openly discussed passing power to his son, Nour El-Fath, who has already been given substantial responsibilities within the government.

Nour El-Fath, who was appointed last year by his father as the coordinator of government affairs, has been granted broad powers within the Cabinet, signaling his increasing political influence.

Just last month, Assoumani’s ruling party won a decisive victory in the country’s parliamentary elections, further consolidating the family’s grip on power.

Interestingly, Nour El-Fath had previously denied any plans to establish a hereditary political system, insisting that Comoros is not a monarchy.
