Electricity has been restored to around 95,000 customers in San Francisco following a widespread power outage that disrupted large parts of the city on Saturday night, according to local authorities and the utility provider Pacific Gas and Electric.
Emergency officials said the blackout initially affected about 130,000 residents in the city of roughly 800,000 people.
PG&E, the main electricity and gas supplier in the region, confirmed that crews had restored power to most customers by 11:00 p.m. local time, while approximately 35,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity.
The company reported no injuries among residents or workers during the incident, Reuters said. Authorities had earlier urged residents to stay indoors as traffic lights failed and public transport services were disrupted across several neighborhoods.
In a message posted on X, PG&E said it was working closely with emergency response teams and city officials to address the outage.
Local official Daniel Lurie warned residents to avoid unnecessary travel, citing rain, darkness and the absence of functioning traffic signals. Traffic police were deployed across major roads to manage congestion and ensure safety.
Officials said the outage was caused by a fire at a power substation. An exact timeline for restoring electricity to all affected customers had not yet been confirmed, according to Agence France-Presse.
