Disruption Hits Finland–Sweden Link

An unexpected outage temporarily disrupted a major power connection between Finland and Sweden early Tuesday, officials said.

The interruption affected Fenno-Skan 2, an 800-megawatt high-voltage submarine cable linking the electricity grids of Finland and Sweden.

Grid operator Fingrid said the disruption was likely caused by a malfunction at a substation, while the undersea cable itself appeared to remain intact.

Engineers inspected the affected equipment and later restored the connection. Fingrid said commercial electricity transmission through the link was expected to resume around midday.

The incident comes as the Baltic Sea region remains on heightened alert following several disruptions to energy and telecommunications infrastructure since Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Authorities in several countries have launched investigations into potential sabotage involving undersea cables and pipelines.

Security officials have also warned about operational risks linked to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet,” a network of largely unregistered oil tankers used to bypass Western sanctions.

Last month, Finnish authorities detained two individuals aboard a cargo vessel suspected of damaging another undersea cable connecting Helsinki and Tallinn.
