A shocking case in Portugal went viral after a 14-year-old teen confessed to deliberately starting multiple forest fires because he felt frustrated with his poor academic performance, according to Euronews.
Police said the teenager admitted during questioning that he travelled by motorbike to wooded areas and used matches to ignite the blazes.
Investigators believe he may be responsible for fires in Sidos, Ardegao, and Arnucela.
The National Criminal Police stated: “The minor may have acted out of anger and frustration due to his weak school results.”
These regions have suffered from frequent and systematic wildfires throughout the summer, sometimes occurring almost daily, sparking fear and anxiety among local communities.
The case, investigated by Braga’s judicial police, has been referred to the public prosecutor, who will transfer it to the Family and Juvenile Court.
Authorities noted that just last month, 52 people were arrested across Portugal on suspicion of arson.
Meanwhile, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere continues to keep the country’s central and southern regions on high alert due to the extreme risk of wildfires.
