On Wednesday, Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa lost consciousness, during his visit to the University of Costa de Caparica, south of Lisbon, and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
The EFE news agency reported, citing the office of the president, that de Sousa lost consciousness due to the deterioration of his health after he visited the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon.
A video posted on social media platforms and sites showed de Sousa's guards transporting him unconscious into the university building amid alert attendance.
It should be noted that de Sousa suffers from health problems, as he underwent a catheterization operation in October of 2019, during which it was found that he had many large coronary blockages.
In 2018, he lost consciousness during his visit to the city of Braga in northern Portugal due to a decrease in blood pressure, and he underwent many different surgeries between 2017 and 2021.
De Sousa, 74, has held the presidency of Portugal since 2016, for two consecutive terms.
