Portugal has announced its intention to tighten immigration restrictions just days before the European Parliament elections, which are expected to see significant gains for right-wing, anti-immigration parties.

The new plan will end the current system that allows foreigners to enter the country first and then apply for a residence permit.

Additionally, foreigners holding tourist visas will no longer be allowed to regularize their status to obtain residency in Portugal, according to Euro News.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro emphasized that the existing system, which permits unrestricted entry of immigrants into Portugal, must come to an end. Currently, there are about 400,000 immigration cases under review.
