Portuguese authorities have confirmed that more than 1,300 people lost their lives during the severe heatwave that struck the country between 27 July and 15 August.
The death toll reached 1,331, marking a 25 percent rise in fatalities compared with the same period in previous years.
According to official data, the most vulnerable group was those aged 75 and above. The extreme rise in temperatures worsened chronic health conditions, particularly cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
The highest numbers of heat-related deaths were recorded in northern and central Portugal, as well as in the southern Alentejo region, Euronews reported.
This latest crisis underscores the escalating threat of climate change across Southern Europe, where record-breaking heatwaves have increasingly taxed public health systems and endangered vulnerable populations.
