Pope Leo XIV called on Sunday for the establishment of peace in conflict-stricken regions, specifically highlighting Ukraine, the Middle East, and other areas where populations are suffering from the ravages of war.
Moreover, the Pope stated that ongoing Russian attacks against Ukraine leave civilians suffering from the bitter winter cold, reiterating his plea for an end to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, according to Vatican News.
"I follow what is happening with sadness; I am close to those who suffer, and I pray for them," the Pontiff continued.
Furthermore, he noted that the protracted conflict causes "increasingly grave consequences for civilians, widens the gap between peoples, and hinders the achievement of a just and lasting peace," urging all parties to intensify their efforts to end the war.
The Pope’s remarks come as Ukrainian and Russian mediators prepare for direct talks in Abu Dhabi under United States sponsorship. The parties have agreed to hold a second round of direct peace negotiations, mediated by the U.S., early next week.
