The Vatican announced, Monday, that Pope Francis will remain in the hospital longer than initially expected after being admitted four days ago due to bronchitis.

In a statement an official statement, the Vatican described the 88-year-old Pope’s health condition as "clinically complex."

Following medical examinations conducted this morning, doctors decided to adjust his medication and treatment plan after detecting a multi-microbial infection in his respiratory system. As a result, he will have to stay in the hospital for a longer period than anticipated.

The statement confirmed that Pope Francis remains in good spirits, and further updates on his health status will be provided later today.

Due to medical advice requiring complete rest, Pope Francis was unable to lead Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square yesterday.

The Pope was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital last Friday after developing a respiratory infection and experiencing a mild fever.
