On Sunday, Pope Francis said he is always ready to meet with President Vladimir Putin of Russia and Vladimir Zelensky of Ukraine.
On his back from a visit to South Sudan, the pope told reporters he was open to meeting with both presidents.
He indicated that he had only gone to Kyiv because it was now impossible to visit Moscow.
He referred to his visit to the Russian embassy in the Vatican immediately after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine to say that he wanted to visit Moscow to talk to Putin to see if there was even the slightest possibility of talks.
Pope Francis made a final appeal for peace in South Sudan on Sunday as he celebrated Mass before tens of thousands of people to close out an unusual mission by Christian religious leaders to nudge forward the country’s recovery from civil war.
