Pope Francis said on Sunday that he is praying for the victims of the sinking fishing boat that was carrying migrants off the coast of Greece, which has so far killed 78 people and left others missing.

"With great sadness and pain, I mourn the victims of the very serious shipwreck that occurred in recent days off the coast of Greece," the Pope added, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, adding that "the sea was calm."

"I renew my prayers for those who have lost their lives and I demand that all possible efforts be made to prevent such tragedies," the Pope continued, noting that June 20 is World Refugee Day, which is promoted by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Greek rescue teams continue to search for about 600 refugees and migrants who are feared missing, after the ship carrying up to 750 people capsized off the coast of the Greek coastal town of Pylos last Wednesday
