Pope Francis, head of the Vatican, called today for the resumption of peace talks in South Sudan, following the suspension of negotiations after the arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar on March 27.

In his Angelus address on the Fourth Sunday of Lent, published by the Vatican Press Office, the Pope expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in the African nation.

The crisis escalated weeks ago when members of the White Army, a militia loyal to Machar, attacked a military base in Upper Nile State.

"I renew my sincere appeal to all leaders to do everything possible to ease tensions in the country," Pope Francis said, adding, "we must set aside our differences and, with courage and responsibility, sit at the negotiating table to start a constructive dialogue."

The Pope further emphasized, "Only in this way can we alleviate the suffering of the beloved people of South Sudan and build a future of peace and stability."
