US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to meet negotiators of Taliban movement and the Afghan government in Qatar on Saturday, amid signs of progress in talks.

The US State Department said in a statement yesterday evening that "Pompeo will hold these meetings separately in Doha, where Afghan government and Taliban have been conducting peace negotiations since September."

Pompeo's meeting with Taliban representatives comes days after the movement asked the administration formed by US President-elect Joe Biden, to stick to the February agreement to withdraw American forces.

The United States has been pulling out troops under the deal which envisages the withdrawal to be complete by May, subject to certain security guarantees, while the Taliban holds peace talks with the Afghan government in Doha.
