U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will host the foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan next Friday, in two separate meetings in Washington, to discuss the military confrontations between the two countries, American magazine “Politico” reported on Monday.
The magazine said - in a report published on its website - that it is unclear whether the Armenian minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and the Azerbaijani counterpart Jeyhun Bayramov will meet in Washington or a tripartite meeting will take place for the three ministers.
“But their same-day visits signal that the U.S. is deepening its efforts to tamp down the resurgent conflict, which has reportedly killed hundreds of combatants and civilians since late September,” Politico said.
“The visits also offer the Trump administration a chance to showcase an attempt at global leadership just days before President Donald Trump faces reelection,” the magazine reported
According to U.S. government documents seen by POLITICO, Azerbaijan Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov will meet first with Pompeo on Friday morning. His Armenian counterpart, Zohrab Mnatsakanyan, will meet shortly afterward with the U.S. secretary of State.
