US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Greece on an official visit early Monday on the first leg of a five-day European tour that will take him also to Italy, the Vatican, and Croatia.
In Greece, Pompeo is set to hold talks with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his counterpart Nikos Dendias, to renew the two countries’ shared commitment to advance security, peace, and prosperity in the eastern Mediterranean and celebrate the strongest US-Greek relationship in decades.
On Monday, America's top diplomat will meet Dendias, sign a bilateral science and technology agreement, as well as hosting energy sector business leaders for a discussion to highlight energy persification and infrastructure projects in Greece.
Pompeo will depart later on Monday to visit the NATO Souda Bay naval base. He will tour the facilities on Tuesday and have lunch with Mitsotakis at the latter’s nearby residence.
The US Secretary of State will depart Greece early Wednesday for Rome.
Pompeo is also scheduled to attend a meeting at the Vatican on religious freedom, his human rights priority. There, too, he will warn of China's actions against minorities, including Muslims.
Finally, he will make a brief stop in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on Friday.
