On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused Iran-backed militias of Baghdad's Green Zone rocket attack, according to Sputnik News agency.

"Iran-backed militias once again flagrantly and recklessly attacked in Baghdad, wounding Iraqi civilians," Pompeo tweeted.

"The people of Iraq deserve to have these attackers prosecuted. These violent and corrupt criminals must cease their destabilizing actions," he added.

According to the Iraqi military, at least eight Katyusha rockets landed in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone on Sunday, in an attack targeting the U.S. Embassy.

"The attack caused some minor damage on the compound,  but that there were no injuries or casualties," the statement added.

On its part, the U.S. Embassy denounced the attack, urging all Iraqi political and governmental leaders to take steps to prevent such attacks and to hold accountable those responsible.
